Abstract

In this paper general reference is made to the increasing demand for high quality long distance communication service throughout Australia and there follows a particular examination of the necessities between Sydney, Newcastle and Maitland. The development of underground cable as a means of solving the service problem is then discussed with special reference to the outstanding advances in high frequency transmission over cable. The new cable, now being laid between Sydney and Maitland, is an outstanding example of the latest design and technique in such matters and a detailed description follows.
