Abstract

The hydro-electric potential of Queensland is almost entirely restricted to the north-eastern coastal area, and is due to the local physiography. The potential is perhaps small compared with that of Tasmania and the alpine block of Victoria and New South Wales, but probably totals approximately 400,000 kW for the State. The first development of any importance was at Barron Falls in 1935, and a project to develop the Tully River at Tully Falls is now nearing completion. The Barron River can be further developed, and other streams which can be exploited are the North and South Johnstone Rivers, Freshwater Creek, the Herbert River and the Burdekin River, and proposals for the development of these are outlined.
