The author, S. A. Prentice MEE BSc AMIEAust, is Professor of Electrical Engineering in the University of Queensland.- Abstract
The effects of thunderstorms on electrical transmission lines and on terminal equipment have been observed from the inception of electricity supply. The economic importance of measures to prevent or reduce damage resulting from lightning strokes has also been recognised, and basic data necessary for the design of protection have been collected over many years in overseas countries. Little information on Australian conditions exists, and engineers have had to rely upon very limited meteorological observations and the results of field measurements made elsewhere.
Observations related to the occurrence of thunderstorms are now being made at a large number of stations throughout Australia. Details of the work in Queensland are described and the results of a five year survey in South-east Queensland are given.
