Abstract

This paper discusses the fundamental section properties affecting the buckling strength of slender beams. In particular, attention is drawn to the importance of the St. Venant torsion constant, and a programme of research is described showing the beneficial effects that can accrue from deliberate increases to its value. Sufficient information is given for the complete design of such members. Reference is made to current codes of practice. It is suggested that they are inadequate in their treatment of slender beams.
