Abstract

The paper presents a brief history of the Establishment and its background. The paper also reviews the activities to set up a permanent exhibition which commenced in 1965, but did not eventuate. These activities continued sporadically until 1975 when the Adelaide Division of the Institution set up its sub-committee on Historical Engineering Relics. An enthusiast was appointed as the Establishment Liaison Officer to this sub-committee and was asked to convene an internal 'museum' committee. By 1978 when he had to resign from both positions due to pressure of work he had carried out a survey to discover items of interest to display in a museum but had not convened a meeting of the committee. The paper then describes the developments and achievements in the period from March 1978 to the present. This is the period when the author has been the Chairman of the Museum Committee and the Liaison Officer of the Institution Committee. The future is briefly discussed and some of the lessons learned by the author are delineated in the conclusion.
