Summary

Brian Loton, AC HonFIEAust, had a long and distinguished career with Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited, commencing as a cadet metallurgical engineering in 1954, becoming general manager of the Newcastle steelworks in 1970, and rising to be chairman from 1992 to 1997. He also held directorships in many other major resource development companies, including National Australia bank, Amcor, Australian Foundation Investment Company, Atlas Copco and North West Shelf Development. He was a foundation member of the Australian Government's Australian Science and Technology Council from 1977 to 1980 and significantly contributed to many other business, mining, metallurgy and philanthropic organisations. His service was recognised by the many Australia and overseas awards he received, including honorary doctorates from Wollongong and Monash Universities.
