Summary

Frank Mathews, BE HonDSc FSTC FIEAust, was a chief engineer at Australian Iron and Steel Ltd in Port Kembla. He played a vital role in improving higher and technical education facilities in Wollongong and was central to the establishment of Wollongong University College, and was a councillor from 1947 until 1981. After retiring and moving to Sydney he was a deputy chancellor of the University of New South Wales and was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science in 1962. He
was also a member of the Library Board of New South Wales and chairman (1966-81) of the Standards Association of Australia.
