Summary
Joseph Brooks worked for the South Australian Department of Survey and Crown Lands 1864-77 and the New South Wales Department of Lands 1877-1906. After retirement he became involved in Australian astronomical circles.

Born Stockport, Cheshire, 2 August 1847. Died Sydney, 9 May 1918. Arrived Adelaide 1856. South Australian Department of Survey and Crown Lands 1864-75, official photographer and involved with drafting and planning for the settlement of Palmerston (Darwin), trigonometrical surveyor 1875-77; licensed surveyor, Department of Lands, Sydney 1877-1906, assisting with the triangulation of New South Wales from 1879; joined several expeditions to observe total solar eclipses 1908-11.
