His research focuses on the biology, ecology and systematics of the family, particularly species limits and phylogeny. He has also studied a number of other Australian plant families including Euphorbiaceae, Phyllanthaceae and Juncaceae. In 1992 he was appointed Lecturer at the University of New England, retiring as Professor in 2021. For 30 years he was Curator of the University's N.C.W. Beadle Herbarium. During this time he reorganised and expanded it to an internationally-recognised collection of over 120,000 specimens.
