With his family he was interned by the allies during WWII. They spent five years in internment camps in South Australia and Victoria until released in September 1946. Gauba collected his first Australian plant specimen in November 1941. Moving to Canberra, he made the acquaintance of Lindsay Pryor, a botanist who was involved in the establishment of the Canberra Botanic Gardens. In 1950 Gauba joined the staff of the Gardens.
