The inaugural Chief Scientist, radio astronomer Virginia Kilborn, is dedicated to fostering transformative science that creates genuine social and economic impact. Since 2025, research programs within the Office have been the History of Australian Science Research Group and the Encyclopedia of Australian Science and Innovation (from which is produced the Bibliography of the history of Australian science).
