He started collecting plants for the National Herbarium of Victoria in 1964: the Herbarium holds approximately 800 specimens collected by Henshall. He moved to Alice Springs in the mid-1970s to become an herbarium technician at the Northern Territory Herbarium. His main interest was in the families Chenopodiaceae and Elatinaceae, encouraged by colleague Peter Latz.
