During this time he undertook mapping surveys of the west and northeast coasts of Tasmania, producing key papers on the Mount Bischoff tin field and the Blue Tier batholith. In 1971 he became Lecturer in economic geology at the University of Western Australia. His research interests was mainly on evolution of the Archaean Yilgarn and Pilbara Blocks and the origin of komatiite-associated nickel deposits. Later his focus shifted to the genesis of gold deposits and the use of GIS in conceptual exploration targeting, and to global metallogeny and the influence of the lithosphere on temporal and spatial distribution of mineral deposits. In 1987 he became Professor of Economic Geology and, in 1988, Director of the ARC Key Centre for Strategic Mineral Deposits at the University. Groves took a leading role on professional organisations. He was President of the Geological Society of Australia, and of the Society of Economic Geologists and the European Society of Economic Geologists.
