<biogHist>
The Portland Field Naturalists Club was founded in 1945. Its purposes are to appreciate, enhance and protect the natural environment, by holding monthly meetings and regular excursions. Members participate in surveys of the local fauna and flora, and revegetation and pest plant control programs. The Club played a pivotal role in the creation of a number of parks and reserves including the Lower Glenelg and Cobboboonee National Parks, Bats Ridge Wildlife Reserve, and the Cape Nelson State Park. Early activities were regularly reported in the local newspaper, <span style="font-style:italic">The Portland guardian</span>, written by members Bert E. Carthew and Noel Learmonth. Since 1968 the Club has published a monthly newsletter. Cliff Beauglehole was a foundation member (and Life Member from 1962) and regular contributor at meetings. Connections with similar organisations across Australia are maintained through membership of the Australian Naturalists Network and the South East Australian Naturalist Association.
