Its aims included stimulating scientific inquiry by presenting original or little-known matters at meetings. Meetings were held at the School of Mines, students at which were granted ex officio membership. The Club also held field excursions and wildflower shows. In 1890 the Club folded, being revived in 1915, with a new set of rules. The proposed name, the School of Mines Science and Field Naturalists Club, was superceded by the Ballarat Science and Field Naturalists Club.
