The Ararat (and District) Field Naturalists Club was founded in 1932. It promoted the protection of nature by advocating the reservation of areas of bush and encouraging members of the community to take an interest in nature. Activities included undertaking projects to plant native trees and shrubs in local parks and holding nature shows. Regular reports of the Club's activities were included in <span style="font-style:italic">The age</span> newspaper. An early President was George Gossip (1935 - 1939), an authority on the local flora.
