Franzen & Sons. Entomology was his principle leisure activity and he became a collector of considerable note. He collected in many parts of Australia, particularly Queensland during the 1920s. Included in his collection are specimens from many of Australia's noted entomologists of the time, including W. DeBoulay, H. J. Carter, R. Illidge, H.W. Brown and J. Macqueen, G.A. Waterhouse, F.P. Dodd, E. P. Jones, H. Elgner, F.M. Angel, and J. Buzacott. Franzen's collections, on his death, came into the possession of his son, Clarence Rudolph Theodore Franzen (1908 - 1984), himself an entomologist of note. Ludvig's grandson Don donated the collection to the Queensland Museum. It comprises approximately 6,800 specimens of Lepidoptera, Coleoptera and Neuroptera, many from locations now under settlement.
