He joined the CSIRO Division of Entomology in 1964, working at the Long Pocket Laboratory, Brisbane. Among the weeds on which he worked were the invasive Noongoora Burr, Lantana camara, Eichornia, Mimosa, Sida and Hyptis. He participated in the release and subsequent field assessment of insect control agents. As one of the team responsible for the control of Salvinia, he received the 1985 UNESCO Science Prize 1985.
