English AACR2 Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules Theme created 2026-03-18 human Ken McInnes updated 2026-05-14 human https://www.eoas.info/biogs/P007999b.htm concept 1851 Exhibition Scholarship Awards Australia AACR2 1891 Funded by surpluses from the 1851 Great Exhibition in London, the 'Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851' awards scholarships to support early career scientists and engineers of exceptional promise, to enable them to undertake further research. The awards have been made since 1891. Initially, candidates were university graduates, nominated and supported by their universities, seeking to continue research studies for a Master or Doctorate degree. Today, candidates for a Research Fellowship, usually need to have a recent PhD with no more than 3 years post-doctoral experience.

Brief history of the award:

* 1891-1921 Science Research Scholarships - open to selected universities throughout the UK and the British Empire. This was a 2 year scholarship but application could be made for an extension for a third year. Many of the scholars appear to have had masters degrees but some had BA/BSc and there were certainly some who already had doctorates.

* 1922-1988 - Overseas Scholarships - 2 years but could apply for an extension for 3rd year. It was for the nominating universities to decide what level of person to nominate. Many of the scholars appear to have had masters degrees but some had BA/BSc and there were certainly some who already had doctorates.

* 1922-present - Research Fellowship (called Senior Studentships to 1966) - for students nominated by UK universities until 1988 and thereafter to applicants from UK and Commonwealth nominees. This was for 2 years but application could be made for extension for a third year. At first there were scholars with BA/BSc degrees, masters degrees and doctorates but it became increasingly a postdoc award with very few exceptions and since the 1970s has been almost totally been a post doc award.
