<abstract>Sir George Read Fisher was the first Chancellor, James Cook University of North Queensland. He was also General Manager and Director, Zinc Corporation Ltd. N.S.W., Chairman of Mount Isa Mines Ltd and President of MIM Holdings Ltd.

His distinguished career was recognised when he was awarded The Institute Medal, Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in 1958, appointed Companion of the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (CMG) in 1961 for his work as Chairman of Mt Isa Mines Ltd. Queensland, appointed Knight bachelor in 1967 for service to mining in Queensland, and awarded the Kernot Memorial Medal in 1969 for distinguished engineering achievement in Australia.</abstract>
