Material from various archival sources has been brought together and arranged according to project/structure. Copy records are chiefly from the National Library John Monash papers collection, the University of Melbourne Archives Reinforced Concrete & Monier Pipe Construction Co. collection, John Thomas' private collection of RC&MPC Co. drawings, and Vic Roads drawings and reports. Other records were obtained from PROV, municipal records, newspapers and local historical societies. The collection consists of copy plans and drawings, both hardcopy and electronic files, photographs and slides. The work resulted in various departmental reports and papers for engineering and historical journals, and working drafts and final copies of these publications are included with the collection. Copies of the major related work "Monash Bridges: Typology Study Reinforced concrete bridges in Victoria 1897-1917" by L. Alves, A. Holgate and G. Taplin are also included. The majority of files in the collection are arranged in alpha runs related to specific structures, originally stored as 'Bridges' (Items 17-160), 'Civil Structures and Buildings 1' (Items 183-245), and 'Civil Structures and Buildings 2' (Items 246-257). These are followed by smaller runs of files related to wharves, city buildings and miscellaneous structures. Project files may include copies of plans/drawings, correspondence, summary reports and original photographs. Plans and drawings in the collection also include sets of A3 copies, and copies made at original sizes some of which are arranged in sets of A3 sections. Access to the CD-ROM recording Alan Holgate's unpublished research is restricted until June 2006 [Item 337 - see notes attached to CD and floppies]. A further addition to the series is a digital copy of Alan Holgate's website 'The Engineering Enterprise of (Sir) John Monash Prior to World War 1', that was hosted at www.aholgate.com.
