Stephen Gaukroger was one of the world's leading historians of science and philosophy. In each of these fields, he was recognised as one of the most significant figures in Australasia. From 1981 he lectured in philosophy and the history of science at the University of Sydney, becoming Professor of History of Philosophy and History of Science in 2014. He played a key role in the amalgamation of the philosophy departments at the University. Gaukroger was an influential member of a number of societies, holding office as President of the Australasian Association for the History, Philosophy, and Social Studies of Science and the Australasian Society for the History of Philosophy. He was also Chair of the National Committee for the History and Philosophy of Science of the Australian Academy of Science. Gaukroger published widely: among his most influential books were <span style="font-style:italic">The emergence of a scientific culture</span> (2006) and <span style="font-style:italic">Civilization and the culture of science</span> (2020). In 2022 he was awarded the History and Philosophy of Science Medal of the Royal Society of New South Wales.
