Other interests include forensic chemistry, surface physics, chaos theory, gas censors, and drug detection. His expert opinion is sought in matters of drug abuse, drugs in sport, and scientific fraud. Among his more than 300 publications are the books Data analysis for chemistry (2005, with Justin Gooding), and Quality assurance for the analytical chemistry laboratory (2007). Hibbert was Professor of Analytical Chemistry at the University of New South Wales from 1987 to 2013, for much of that time serving as Head of his School and Chair of the Faculty of Science. A prominent member of local scientific organisations, he held executive office with the Royal Society of New South Wales and the Analytical Chemistry Division of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute.
