He uses chemical, spectroscopic, biochemical and cell biology techniques to investigate the mode of action and toxicities of metal-containing anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and anti-diabetic drugs and supplements. Particular interests include: Cr- and Ni-induced cancers; ruthenium and gallium anti-cancer drugs; X-ray absorption spectroscopy of drugs, biological fluids, cells and tissues; and Fullerene and fulleride electrochemistry and spectroscopy. For 24 years Lay was Professor of Inorganic Chemistry (and later Chemistry) at the University of Sydney, where he was also Director of the Centre for Heavy Metals Research and the Foundation for Inorganic Chemistry. He has received a number of awards for his research, including the H. G. Smith Memorial Medal from the Royal Australian Chemical Institute and the Royal Society of New South Wales Edgeworth David Medal.
