It recognises distinguished research in plant biology, and more broadly in agriculture, conducted mainly in New South Wales. Walter Poggendorff, whose bequest to the Society funds the Lecture, had a distinguished career in breeding new varieties of rice and in the development of the Australian rice industry. In 2023 the Lecture was renamed the RSNSW Poggendorff Award and Lectureship in Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, with the Award being presented every three years from 2024.
