He has extensive experience in international agriculture, particularly in wheat breeding and genetics. An important part of his research is leading national and international initiatives that aim to improve crop productivity in stressed environments and improve the sustainability of farming systems. Over 40 wheat cultivars have been released to farmers from his research across 13 countries. Since 2006 Trethowan has been Director of the Plant Breeding Institute at the University of Sydney.
