Later as a draftsman working for the Toowoomba Foundry, he designed and improved windmill pumps and the engines and boilers of portable steam powered water pumping equipment ordered by the Irrigation Commission of Queensland. After he joined the Intercolonial Boring Company in 1922, he designed the Simplex windmill range that became widely used across Queensland.
