His research focuses on the intersection between geology and water, from caves to aquifers. Using an interdisciplinary approach and isotopic and geochemical techniques, he investigates past climates, groundwater recharge, and fire history by examining stalagmites. He has published over 270 research papers. Baker is Professor in the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of New South Wales.
