Maria Crouch was a plant collector during the 1870s in northern regions of Western Australia, at Nickol Bay, Fortescue and Harding Rivers, and Champion Bay. She sent these specimens, which included a number of types, to Ferdinand von Mueller, the Victorian Government Botanist, at the Botanical Museum of Victoria. The National Museum of Victoria holds over 200 of her specimens: other specimens are in the state Herbaria of Western Australia and New South Wales. The species plant <span style="font-style:italic">Hedyotis crouchiana</span> (Rubiaceae) was named by Mueller in her honour.
