On returning to Melbourne he established a practice in Collins St, where he stayed for the rest of his life. For over 30 years he was Honorary Surgeon at the Melbourne Hospital, while also being a consultant at the Children's, St Vincent's and Queen Victoria Hospitals. Hughes specialised in diseases of the eye, ear and throat, and in paediatric orthopaedics.
