After 14 years in practice in Mt Gambier, South Australia, he returned to London in 1882 to study ophthalmology. Two years later he returned to Melbourne and established his practice in Collins St where he specialised in the treatment of trachoma. This became possibly the largest such practice in Melbourne. Although he was not associated with any of the major hospitals, Jackson was highly thought of among his peers.
