He returned to Melbourne in 1895 and established a practice where he specialised in eye, ear, nose and throat. For 30 years he was Honorary Surgeon in the Eye Department of the Alfred Hospital. He was noted for his skill as a diagnostician and held in some esteem as a teacher. Gault took an active part in professional societies in Melbourne. He was a founding member of the Ophthalmological Society of Melbourne and a keen supporter.
