Through a network of branches and the staging of meetings and events, the Institute aims to provide the means for those working in the field to discuss energy issues and evolving technologies with enthusiasts, experts, policymakers, and industry leaders. For over 40 years the Institute has published a news journal to keep members and others informed of what was happening in the energy sector. The Institute also presents several awards to recognise achievements of individuals.

Awards presented by the Institute include:
Honorary Life Member (from 1982): members who have made significant contributions to the Institute at a national or branch level over a substantial period;
Baragwanath Award (1981 - 2013): recognises outstanding lifetime contributions by individuals to coal science research in Australia;
AIE Medal: recognises outstanding contributions in the energy field, in Australia or by an Australian.
