It recognises significant contribution to the economic advancement of the Australian economy through work in the chemistry area. Leonard Weickhardt, who had a distinguished career in the chemical industry, was President of the Institute from 1958 to 1959 and Chancellor of the University of Melbourne from 1972 to 1978.
