After enduring a difficult childhood, he enrolled at the V. N. Karazin Kharkov National University, Ukraine, achieving his doctorate in 1961 with a thesis on harmonic analysis of weighted space. In 1964 he took a job at the Institute of Chemical Physics in Chernogolovka, Russia, soon becoming Head of Mathematics at the Institute. Gurarii came to Australia in 2000.
