<abstract>The Geographical Society of New South Wales was founded in 1927 on the proposal of T. Griffith Taylor. It is a professional society whose members are geography academics, teachers, practising geographers from both the public and private spheres, and other interested members of the public. Objectives are: to encourage and promote geography in New South Wales and throughout Australia; to advocate on environmental and social issues in Australia; and to support geographical literacy and awareness, and inspire enthusiasm for geography. The Society has been represented on the National Committee for Geography of the Australian Academy of Science in Canberra since 1995, and the Geographical Names Board of New South Wales since its establishment in 1966. Since 1928 the Society has published <span style="font-style:italic">Australian geographer</span>, Australia's oldest academic geographical journal.</abstract>

<span style="font-style:italic">Bulletin of the Geographical Society of New South Wales</span> vol. 1, no. 1 (April/May 1969) - vol. 1, no. 3 (July 1969): later <span style="font-style:italic">Geography bulletin</span> (ISBN 0156-9236) vol. 1, no. 4 - 43 (1969-2011).</p>
<p>Awards presented by the Society include:<br />
Macdonald Holmes Memorial Medal (since 1977); recognises distinguished contribution in the field of geographical education in Australia; co-sponsored by the Geography Teachers Association of New South Wales, from which half the recipients have been drawn;<br />
Fellowship (biennial since 1969); recognises members who have made significants contribution to geography and to the work of their professional organisation;<br />
Life Membership (since 2013): recognises a member or benefactor who has provided exceptional support to the Society.</p>
