One of his principal contributions was a systematic survey of newly-available pesticides and the establishment of protocols, still in use, to field-test pasture pesticides. This is credited with Tasmania avoiding many common problems with persistent soil insecticides. Other research was into cockchafers (Scarabaeidae), ghost moths (Hepialidae) and the southern armyworm (Noctuidae), which threatened the viability of soldier settlement schemes in the 1950s. He later became an authority on aphids, organising surveys and establishing an extensive reference collection. Martyn became Chief Entomologist in the Department in 1967 and for over ten years was Deputy Director of Agriculture. He represented Tasmania on the Commonwealth Standing Committee on Agriculture.
