David Johnson was a mammalogist whose research focused on Asiatic mammals. His interest stemmed from the time he spent in Guam during WWII when stationed at the U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit 2. He published widely on mammals of Korea, Nepal and the Pacific islands. For over 25 years he worked in the Division of Mammals at the United States National Museum, heading the Division from 1948 to 1965. In 1948 he was appointed to the American-Australian Scientific Expedition to Arnhem Land. Results from his examination of specimens collected during the Expedition were published in volume 4 of the <span style="font-style:italic"> Records of the American-Australian Scientific Expedition to Arnhem Land</span>(1964).
