Its first meeting was held the following year. It is the professional, independent organisation in Australia and New Zealand for those with expertise in the use and toxicity of medicines and chemicals. Members include clinicians, pharmacologists, pharmacists and scientists, with membership open to anyone interested in the aims of the Society who have appropriate qualifications. Emphasis is placed in supporting students and mid-career researchers. International organisations with which the Society is affiliated are the International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (IUPHAR) and the International Union of Toxicology (IUTOX). The Society has hosted international meetings including the International Congress of Pharmacology (1987 and 2004) and the South East Asian Western Pacific Regional Meeting of Pharmacologists (2007). In conjunction with the Australian Society for Medical Research, ASCEPT publishes Clinical and experimental pharmacology and physiology (ISSN 0305-1870) (1974+).
