At 38 years old he became Australia's youngest vice chancellor. His initial contract was extended to 2002 and then 2027. His earlier research work focused on use of advanced computer technologies to assist molecular design for the phamaceutical industry. He was a friend of the late Sir Terry Pratchett whose novels explored the foundations or history and philosophy of science. 2019 2019 Award - Ellected Fellow, Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering 2022 2022 Event - With Peter Hoj, they commenced work on the merger of the University of South Australia and the University of Adelaide to create the new Adelaide University Universities Australia (2007 - )
