In his leisure time he was an enthusiastic entomologist, being particularly paropsine beetles (family Coleoptera). He was involved in the revival of the Entomological Society of Victoria in 1961 and served two terms as President of the Society. His service to the Society was acknowledged with the presentation of the Le Souef Memorial Award. In 1983 he donated by collection, together with his photographs, to the Australian National Insect Collection.
