ARIC was established by the Australian Government in February 2011. The Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research, 2018 (the Code), jointly authored by the Australian Research Council (ARC), National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and Universities Australia, clearly articulates the broad principles that underpin an 'honest, ethical and conscientious research culture'

ARIC operates as:

• ARIC-NHMRC, established under s39 of the National Health and Medical Research Council Act 1992

• ARIC-ARC, established under the ARC Board's powers under s9, and the ARC Chief Executive Officer's powers under section 33B of the Australian Research Council Act 2001.
