However his passion was for butterflies and his principal collecting region the islands of Torres Strait. He first visited these islands 1983 with Ian Knight. The pair made dozens of visits to the islands over more than 40 years. Lambkin identified nearly 230 species from the region. With Knight, Lambkin built a collection of over 12,000 butterfly specimens from the Torres Strait, as well as from across Australia, Southeast Asia and Oceania. This nationally significant collection was donated to the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery in 2019.
