He is particularly concerned with climate adaptation and endosymbionts. In 1985 be was appointed Lecturer in the Department of Genetics and Human Variation at La Trobe University, ultimately becoming Professor and Director of the Centre for Environmental Stress and Adaptation Research (CESAR). In 2005 he moved to the University of Melbourne where he is Laureate Professor and Group Head and Chair of Ecological Genetics and leads the Pest and Environmental Adaptation Research Group at Bio21. His research group focuses on pest control and environmental stress adaptation using tools in molecular biology and genetics. Projects include integrated pest control options for the grains and grape/wine industries, novel approaches to suppress dengue fever, and ways to predict species distribution shifts under climate change.
