On its establishment in 1954, the Academy took over this Committee from the Australian National Research Council, thereby maintaining Australia's formal connection to the International Astronomical Union. The Committee fosters astronomical science in Australia and establishes links between the Academy and Australian astronomers and relevant scientific societies, and with Australian and overseas astronomers. A formal strategic planning process results in the production of 10-year plans, providing an opportunity to carry out a stock take of the Committee's capabilities and assess its impact both nationally and internationally. It also provides a vision for the future, sets priorities and develops strategies, and is highly influential in presenting the Committee's vision to stakeholders outside the research sector, including the Commonwealth Government and industrial/research partners nationally and internationally.
