Dedicated to expanding the knowledge and understanding of these fields, it sets and continuously improves standards of clinical practice and patient care; offers evidence-based training and educational and assessment programs; promotes research; and advises government on policy matters.

Awards presented by the Society include:
Distinguished Researcher Prize (annual, since 1988): recognises outstanding contribution to research in the fields of gastroenterology and hepatology by a Member of the Society;
Outstanding Clinician Award (annual, since 2008): recognises a Member's outstanding contribution to clinical gastroenterology and hepatology, particularly recognising mentorship and clinical excellence over many years of practice and a notable contribution to research;
Fellowship (since 2022): recognises a Member of the Society who has made a sustained contribution at the highest level, to the field of gastroenterology and hepatology in Australia and/or contribution to the Society;
Life Membership: recognises a Member of the Society of at least 20 years, who has given distinguished and conspicuous service to the Society.
