For over 30 years he has been a member of both the Victorian Wader Study Group (VWSG) and the Australasian Wader Studies Group (AWSG). He has held office in both organisations, and been Editor of, and a regular contributor to, their journals. Campbell holds an A-class banding license with a cannon- and mist-netting endorsement. He has led banding and netting activities across the Victorian coastal areas and into South Australia, and monthly bird counts at places such as Inverloch (Vic.), the Cheetham wetlands near Melbourne, and Hawdon (S.A.). With his wife Sarah, Campbell has been involved in counts particularly of Sandeling, Ruddy turnstone, and Pied oystercatcher.
