Objectives include: monitoring of the feeding ecology and migration of shorebird populations by use of counting and banding programs; instigate and encourage scientific studies; cooperate with related organisations; promote policies for the conservation of shorebirds and their habitat; and communicate to a wide audience through publication. Since 2006 the AWSG has been a partner in the East Asian-Australasian Flyway Partnership. In alternate years the AWSG organises the Australasian Shorebird Conference. For over 30 years the AWSG has had a close association with the Victorian Wader Study Group which maintains a large database of shorebird biometrics, demographics and movement across the flyway.
