J. Kempson Maddox was a leading advocate for the Society's establishment: Guy Lendon, the inaugural President, held office from 1954 to 1956. In 1957 the name was changed. The Society is the professional body for cardiologists and those working in the area including researchers, scientists, cardiovascular nurses, allied health professionals and other healthcare workers. Aims of the Society include: the promotion of excellence in education, training, research and practice in cardiovascular medicine; the development of professional standards of practice; provision of advice to government; facilitation of communication between practitioners by holding annual meetings and the publication of its journal. In 2002 and 2014 the Society hosted the World Congress of Cardiology. The Society is affiliated with the European Society of Cardiology (since 2008) and the American College of Cardiology (since 2012).

Heart, lung and circulation (ISSN 1443-9506) has been published by the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand and the Australian and New Zealand Society of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgeons since 1992: originally titled AustralAsian journal of cardiac and thoracic surgery (ISSN 1037-2091).

Awards presented by the Society include:
The R. T. Hall Prize (from 1965), recognising senior and established investigators who have advanced knowledge of the cardiovascular system;
Distinguished Service Award for distinguished service to the Society;
President's Medal recognising major, specific and substantial service to the Society;
Distinguished Career Achievement Award for a lifetime distinguished career in clinical and/or academic medicine, research or public health as a Society .
