Phillip Mann was a leading expert on carnivorous plants. In his youth he studied horticulture at Kings Park and Botanic Garden in Perth, but his career was with the Western Australian Police Force. His enthusiasm, however, was for carnivorous plants. He made field trips all through Western Australia, particularly in the southwest of the state, and to southeast Asian countries. Mann was particularly interested in the genera Drosera and Nepenthes. These and other genera were propagated at the nursery he ran part-time, Southern Carnivores. Over a period of more than 30 years he discovered many pygmy and tuberous Drosera which were later given formal description. Drosera mannii and other taxa were named in his honour.
